I believe this is a great solution because it would make logical sense based on the established redstone interaction mechanics, and it would be quite versatile since the comparator's signal strength could be changed. I'd strongly recommend doing the same thing for the melon stem and pumpkin stem models as well, since that fix is just as easy.
