The Praetorian Prefect ( praefectus praetorio) in the time of Augustus was a military officer, the commander of the praetorian cohorts in Rome, which formed the emperor's body-guard. About 385 Roman historian, Ammianus Marcellinus, wrote Res gestae libri XXI, the last major surviving historical account of the late Roman empire. After all those campaigns against the Alamanni, Valentinian makes peace with them; both sides keep the agreement.
